Forró Masterclasses for Creators
The European Forró Federation (FoFed) launched its online Masterclass Series to address gaps in knowledge and support professional development in the Forró community. These workshops cover a range of topics relevant to both beginners and experienced Forró practitioners. Each session is designed to meet the community’s needs, focusing on practical and cultural aspects of Forró.
Purpose and Structure
FoFed’s Masterclass Series is driven by a commitment to build a skilled and connected Forró community across Europe. Topics are proposed by FoFed members and reviewed by the board to ensure relevance and diversity. The workshops cover essential areas like event promotion, financial management, dance ethics, and teaching methods, offering a balanced mix of practical skills and cultural knowledge.
The instructors are experts in their fields, selected to provide high-quality instruction. Each workshop is coordinated by FoFed, which also compensates the instructors, ensuring professional, reliable sessions.
Highlights from Past Masterclasses

Participants learned to identify the unique rhythms of each genre and recognized the music’s iconic songs. Enrique and João shared practical techniques for understanding and appreciating Forró’s rhythmic diversity, which proved especially helpful for dancers, musicians, and fans looking to deepen their connection to the music.
Accordion for Non-Accordion Players

Musician Alex Almeida led a session introducing the accordion to a non-musician audience. Participants learned about the instrument’s history, basic components, and the role it plays in Forró music. Alex also discussed some of the notable accordion players in Forró, from pioneers like Luiz Gonzaga to contemporary artists. This session provided a solid foundation for those interested in the instrument and its cultural significance.

Participants explored the basics of structuring a class, engaging students, and building a teaching practice. The session covered practical techniques for creating meaningful connections with students, making it a valuable resource for aspiring and established Forró teachers.
Looking Ahead
FoFed’s Masterclass Series is an ongoing initiative, with new workshops planned regularly. Each session provides participants with skills they can immediately apply in their own practice, whether as dancers, musicians, or community leaders. The aim is not only to help individuals grow but also to strengthen the broader Forró community in Europe.
